How to install PVC pipes

The type of material you use to install your sprinkler system will actually depend on the recommendations of the sprinkler manufacturer. There are sprinkler systems that use plastic, flexible pipe, or even clamps and metal inserts. But recently, the other systems are now using PVC pipes and fittings. However, in this article, we will discuss a sprinkler system that always requires PVC piping for its water line. PVC is poly vinyl chloride, designed to strong enough to hold water pressure for your lawn sprinkler needs. Since it is plastic, it does not corrode and will last longer. More professional contractors are turning to PVC pipes because they are easier to install and easier to prepare. A set of accessories also goes with PVC pipes and they can be connected perfectly with ease. Just make sure that you use the PVC cleaner on any PVC pipe project for better performance.

Here are simple DIY instructions on how to connect PVC pipes at home:

Step 1 – Begin cutting your pipes after measuring them according to your required length. You can remove any burrs by simply using a pocket knife. Make sure that the cut should be as square as possible to come up with a leak free installation after the project. Uneven ends may sometimes cause water leaks in your connections.

Step 2 – When connecting fittings, you must take the gloss off on both ends of the connection that is the end of the pipe and the inside of the fitting, by using a piece of emery paper. Once ready, wipe both ends with PVC cleaner.

Step 3 – For installing riser tees, it would be necessary to fit the pieces together dry at first and then mark the alignment using a felt tip pen or a marker.

Steps 4 – After preparing the PVC pipe, begin actual connections. Start by coating both surfaces with PVC solvent before you connect the pieces together. Insert the connections as far as you can then give the pipe a 1/4 turn to spread the solvent and leave it to dry for a two hours.

Step 5 – Once the solvent dries up, you can start testing your connections and run water through the pipe. Observe if there are leaks on your connections.

If you have carefully done these steps perfectly, we will assume that you have a leak free PVC line in your home. Leaks may occur if the solvent has not dried enough and water is turned on abruptly. Leaks can also be a result of uneven cuts on edges. But sometimes, leaks are results of broken pipes that are either damage while in transit to your home. These are the major causes of new PVC pipe leaking to watch for. Be sure to buy your pipes in perfect condition to avoid wasting time and energy in your installation. This can cause you time and effort in replacing broken parts and redoing the procedure.

PVC pipe installation is also regulated by law. You can check your state and local codes before you start your project. Comply with all the safety precautionary measures required by law on PVC pipes to avoid accidents and health problems.
